Howlite

ETYMOLOGY: By chemist, mineralogist and geologist Henry How, canadian, who was the first to describe the new mineral species.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Monoclinic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Secondary.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: Ca2SiB5O9 (OH) 5.

HARDNESS: 3- 3.5 on the Mohs scale.

FIELDS: US, Iran, Afghanistan, Argentina, Australia, China.

 

MINERALOGY: It is often found associated with deposits of borate minerals. It forms as a secondary mineral in arid environments, usually brown veins, dark gray or black features making turquoise. The dyestuff for the blue hue is copper, it is a calcium borate also containing silicon.


MYTHOLOGY: The howlita, also called khaulita or silicoborocalcita, was discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia (Canada), being named after Henry How, chemical, Canadian geologist and mineralogist who was the first to describe the new mineral species.
