ETYMOLOGY: From greek, astron (star) and phyllon (leaf).
 
CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Triclinic.
 
PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.
 
MINERAL CLASS:  Silicates.
 
CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS(K, Na) 3 (Fe + Mn) 7Ti2Si8O24 (O, OH) 7.
 
HARDNESS: 3 - 4 in the Mohs scale.
 
FIELDSRussia (Kola), Norway (Langesun, Bratholm, Stoko), USA (Colorado). Greenland, Canada (Mt.Saint Hilaire).
 

MINERALOGY: It is often associated in syenites, alkaline granites and pegmatites. It has in its composition titanium, zirconium, iron, manganese, sodium and potassium. Crystals with tabular habit of hexagonal, elongated and generally radiated contour. Needles with good peel and fragile.

 

MYTHOLOGY: The astrophyllite was discovered in 1854 in the Laven Island (Iran).
