ETYMOLOGY: Comes from the greek hyper = above and sthenos = force.

CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Rhombic.

PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Primary.

CLASS MINERAL: Silicates.

CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTS: (Fe 2+, Mg) 2Si2O6.

HARDNESS:  5.5 - 6 on the Mohs scale.

MINERALOGY: Hypersthene is a mineral group of silicates, Inosilicates subgroup and within them belongs to the pyroxene. It is a magnesium and iron silicate. It is found in pegmatites, andesites, cordieríticos gneisses (as metamorphic mineral) and eruptive rocks granudas. Usually occurs in laminar masses or cleaved very small pieces and faceted crystals with metallic luster, purplish brown. It is an intermediate element ferromagnésico series solid solution whose end is magnesium enstatite (Mg2Si2O6) and end with the iron is ferrosilita (Fe2Si2O6).

 


MYTHOLOGY: Today is discredited as mineral because it is considered rather than the entire series are varieties of enstatite, but still appears in many treaties of mineralogy. Hypersthene is the name given to the enstatite when the magnesium ion replaces the iron ion in an amount exceeding 13%. Another intermediate mineral in this series is the broncita, which differs from the hiperstena that has more magnesium ((Mg, Fe) 2Si2O6).
