ETYMOLOGY: From the latin basaltes and ancient greek βασανίτης east of βάσανος. "Very hard stone".
 
CRYSTAL SYSTEM: Prismatic / hexagonal.
 
PRINCIPLE OF FORMATION: Volcanic Eruptions.
 
MINERAL CLASS: Silicates, feldspar, pyroxene, plagioclase; mineral mix.
 
CHEMICAL FORMULA, MINERAL ELEMENTSSiO2 Na2O K2O MgO CaO.

HARDNESS: 8 on the Mohs scale.
 
FIELDS: It is one of the most abundant rocks in the crust. It is also found on the surfaces of the Moon and Mars, and in some meteorites.
 
 

MINERALOGY: Volcanic igneous rock whose silica content is less than 52%; granular texture, fine, escoriforme (form slag = rugged and rough rich volcanic materials). Essential minerals that contain it are: calcium plagioclase, pyroxenes, olivine may further contain, magnetite, apatite, quartz, nepheline, among others. It is formed by the cooling of basic lavas.
