ETYMOLOGY: QUARTZ = comes from the Greek word "kristallos" meaning ice and "Hard" in Slavic. STRAWBERRY = the color of the mineral.

MINERALOGY: The strawberry quartz is one of the rarest specimens of this type of ore, gets its color from inclusions of various forms of iron oxide. There are four different iron oxides, but chemically related that can be found in quartz. They include lepidocrocite (FeO (OH)), goethite (also FeO (OH), but a different crystalline structure), limonite (FeO (OH) nH2O) and hematite (Fe2O3).

MYTHOLOGY: The strawberry quartz is also known as quartz "red fire". Some examples have very fine inclusions that are visible only under magnification, showing the color more or less uniform strawberry. Other inclusions are clearly visible and can appear as transparent quartz with red needles, flakes or scales.
